CEM Module Faults

850S70V70

What is the CEM module and what does it control?

CEM (Central Electronic Module) is the central electronic control module that controls the CAN bus, door locking, alarm, headlights, fog lights, turn signals, interior lights, rear window lifts, fuel pump, wipers, power steering, seat heaters and horn. The CEM is located inside the relay box in the driver's footwell.

What are the typical symptoms of a faulty CEM module?

The most common symptoms when the older CEM version (before L-model) fails: random electrical faults in various systems, locking problems, light malfunctions, wipers starting on their own or instrument cluster faults.

What should be noted when replacing the CEM module?

The CEM contains the vehicle's configuration file (VIN number, equipment data). When replacing the unit, the VIN cannot be read until the software is loaded from Volvo's central database. Replacement requires VIDA software.
