850/V70 steering rack replacement

850V70

How is the 850/V70 steering rack replaced?

1. Lift front end with jack, place on axle stands firmly — higher is better. 2. Remove front wheels, remove stabilizer bar drag links. 3. Open steering shaft bolt from driver side wheel well (nut 13 mm, bolt head 10 mm). 4. Remove tie rod ends (if replacing). 5. Support motor (chain hoist + lifting beam). 6. Remove rear motor mount. 7. Remove front subframe mount. 8. Open 3 rear subframe bolts on both sides. 9. Loosen front subframe bolts (about 1 cm slack). 10. Carefully lower the rear of the subframe — steering rack comes free from the steering shaft.

Is a lift needed for steering rack replacement?

No — the job works with a jack. The subframe is lowered from the rear, which allows the steering rack to come free. Monitor fuel lines and electrical wiring to make sure nothing gets stuck.
