Engine Swap FAQ
What are the legal limits for engine swaps?
Under Finnish law, an engine in a car may be modified using the most powerful and largest engine of the model series as the reference point. Displacement may deviate from the model series maximum by +25% and power by +20%. Engine weight is usually not an issue as long as axle loads remain within limits.
What are the power and displacement limits for popular rear-wheel-drive Volvos?
200 series: 186 hp (155 hp × 1.20) and 3,561 cc (2,849 × 1.25). Reference engines: B21FTic and B28F. 300 series: 138 hp and 2,482 cc. Reference engine: B19E/B200E (115 hp). 700 series: 224 hp and 3,561 cc. Reference engine: B204FT (200 hp) / B280F. 900/S/V90 series: 244 hp and 3,652 cc. Reference engine: B6304F/S (204 hp).
What emission requirements apply to engine swaps?
Before 1.1.1978: no emission requirements. 1.10.1986–31.12.1992 (non-low-emission): the easiest solution is to install a catalytic converter in the exhaust, which satisfies emission values. 1.1.1993 onwards: all cars are low-emission. If a car has had a catalytic converter, it is 99% certainly low-emission.
