What are the differences between B230ET, FT and FK engines?

B230ET: Without catalytic converter, Motronic control, higher compression ratio, 180 hp. Head 531, A-cam. B230FT: With catalytic converter, LH-Jetronic control, lower compression ratio, 160 hp. Head 530, T-cam. First FT engines from 1987. B230FK: Low-pressure turbo in 900-series, 130 hp.

What are the boost pressures and fuel injection system differences?

Boost pressure: FT 0.5 bar, FK 0.3 bar. LH-Jetronic 2.2 (before ~1990): Cannot be reprogrammed. RPM signal from distributor Hall sensor. LH-Jetronic 2.4 (1990→): Can be reprogrammed. Sensor reads the flywheel, located at the top of the block. Identified from the diagnostic socket on the driver side of the engine bay.

What year-to-year differences are there in the engine?

Fuel injectors: Around 1994 onwards in FT/FK blocks. Connecting rods: Around 1991 onwards stronger versions. Turbo mounting flange: Around 1990 changed (inlet profile slightly modified). Turbos: Early 1990s Garrett T25, late 1990s Mitsubishi. The difference between FK and FT is the waste gate spring.
