Temperature control unit repair
If your car blows extremely hot air at one moment and ice-cold the next regardless of settings, the fault is often found in broken solder joints inside the climate control panel or a dirty interior temperature sensor.
Required tools
Phillips head screwdriver and flathead screwdriver Torx set (T20/T25 and smaller for the circuit board) Quality soldering iron (adjustable temperature 290–330 °C recommended) Solder sucker (preferably vacuum suction pump or suction station) and lead-based solder
Work steps: Disassembly
Frame removal: Start by removing the plastic frame around the panel. Use a flathead screwdriver or plastic pry tool and gently lever from the corner. Clips do not need to be removed separately. Unit removal: Below the frame is the CCM unit itself, held in place by 4 Phillips head screws. Connectors: Push the unit slightly inward to make room to rotate it and disconnect the electrical connectors and small sampling tube at the back (interior temperature sensor suction tube). Extraction: The unit is tight to fit out of the center console, but it will come out at a certain angle with some maneuvering.
Work steps: Circuit board service
Housing opening: Remove 4 Torx screws from the back of the unit. Gently pry the plastic tabs apart around the edges so the back cover comes off. Circuit board removal: The circuit board is usually held in the housing by 2 small Torx screws. Gently bend from the sides so the board lifts up. Soldering (Critical step): Inspect the potentiometer legs (those three rollers) and multi-pin connector leads with a magnifying glass. Look for tiny hairline cracks in the solder. Cleaning: Remove old solder with a suction pump or suction station. Do not use forceful mechanical solder removal as it can tear the copper foil off the circuit board. New solder: Re-solder the legs using lead-based solder. It is easier to work with and handles vibration better than lead-free solder. Temperature: Keep the iron at approximately 310 °C. Too hot an iron damages components, too cold creates a "cold solder joint."
Additional maintenance: Interior temperature sensor
While the panel is open, always clean the interior temperature sensor: Behind the small grille at the front of the panel is a thin wire (NTC resistor) and a small intake fan. Gently blow dust out with compressed air and clean the wire carefully with electronics cleaner (CRC Precision Cleaner). Do not touch the wire with your fingers or anything hard, it is extremely fragile.
Important reminder: Battery disconnection
Disconnect the negative terminal of the car battery before disconnecting connectors and wait 5 minutes. If you disconnect the CCM panel while power is on, the car will register a communication loss and illuminate the SRS airbag light, which cannot be reset without a tester.
