S/V40 service light reset
S40/V40 service light reset
The service light comes on as a reminder for oil changes and scheduled maintenance. The light does not affect the car's operation, but it's good to reset it after service.
Model years 1999–2004 (and some late 1998 models)
This procedure applies to most gasoline models and newer diesels. Turn the ignition key to position I (accessories on, ignition off). Press and hold the trip meter reset button. Turn the ignition key to position II (ignition on, warning lights illuminate). Hold the trip meter button down until the SERVICE light starts flashing (this takes about 10–15 seconds). Release the trip meter button immediately when the light flashes. The instrument cluster may emit a beep sound ("beep") as confirmation of success. Turn off the ignition. Reset is complete.
Model years 1996–1998 (Older instrument cluster)
In the oldest models with a mechanical odometer dial or earliest digital display, reset cannot be done with a key combination. How to reset: Requires a diagnostic scanner (via OBD port). Where: Most independent shops or Volvo dealers can do this in minutes. DIY: You can purchase an inexpensive OBD2 code reader that supports service interval reset (e.g., iCarsoft or Volvo-based Vident).
Exceptions and diesel models (such as 90hp Diesel)
Older diesel models (especially 90hp/95hp versions before 2000) are often tricky: -98 90hp Diesel: In this model, the service light usually cannot be reset yourself using the trip meter. It almost always requires a service visit or specialized Volvo diagnostic equipment. Newer dCi/Common Rail diesels: These usually follow the procedure in section 1 (1999–2004).
Common reset errors
Release too early: If you release the button before the light flashes, the reset fails. Release too late: If you hold too long after the flash, the light may stay on. Trip meter resets: It's normal for the trip meter reading to reset if you don't press the button fast enough at the right time, but the service interval resets only with the flash.
Tip
If the SERVICE light comes back on immediately after reset or flickers while driving, there may be a real fault code in the engine control (though it's usually marked by a CHECK ENGINE light). Reading fault codes from the OBD port is recommended.
