S/V40 instrument cluster removal
S40/V40 instrument cluster removal
Removing the instrument cluster from the "little Volvo" requires removing several plastic parts and lowering the steering column so the unit can come out of its housing intact.
Required tools
Phillips head screwdriver Torx set (T25 is most common) Socket set (for steering wheel bolts) Recommendation: Disconnect the negative battery terminal before starting work to avoid short circuits.
Step-by-step procedure
1. Removal of steering column covers Lower cover: Remove the plastic protective panel below the steering wheel by opening marked screws. Carefully disconnect the footwell light wires. Steering wheel plastics: Remove two screws below the wheel holding the column covers together. Lower the wheel adjustment lever and remove the lower plastic cover. Upper cover: Once the lower plastic is removed, the upper steering wheel cover lifts away from its slots. 2. Lowering the steering column For the cluster to fit out, the steering wheel must come down: Open two large bolts below the steering column. The wheel drops carefully downward. The wires will hold its weight, but it drops enough to free up critical space. 3. Instrument cluster bezel removal Look underneath the cluster bezel; you'll find two Phillips screws pointing upward. Pull the bezel straight toward you. The bezel is retained at the bottom by two snap tabs, so you may need to apply some force. 4. Cluster itself removal Now you can access the actual cluster, which is held by Torx screws: Open one Torx screw on each side of the cluster's bottom. Open one Torx screw at the top center of the cluster. Carefully pull the cluster out and tilt it to access the electrical connectors on the back.
Important notes during assembly
Electrical connectors: Make sure the connectors snap fully back into place during reassembly. Poor contact can cause cluster glitches or warning lights. Steering wheel bolts: Remember to tighten the two large steering column bolts properly! Securing the steering is a safety issue. Airbag: If the car has power while the cluster is out, the SRS light may illuminate. Keep the battery disconnected during the entire process.
Tip
If your cluster shows symptoms (e.g., needles jumping or lights flickering), check the PCB solder joints around the multi-pin connectors. They are a typical failure point in this model.
