Light switch and climate panel bulb replacement
Dashboard bulb replacement
Volvo's original bulbs are often mounted in plastic holders with blue or gray "caps" to achieve the correct color temperature. Original Volvo bulbs can cost 15–20 € each, so handle them carefully.
Before you start: Important warning
Battery disconnection: Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before starting work. Wait about 5 minutes after removing the key before disconnection. Why? If you remove the climate panel (CCM) with power on, the car will register a data transfer error and light the SRS airbag warning, which requires dealer reset.
Light switch panel bulbs
Behind the light switch are usually three low-profile bulbs. Removal: Open two Phillips head screws at the bottom of the panel. Panel out: Gently pull the panel out starting from the bottom. Disconnect the electrical connector (small locking tab on the side). Replacement: On the underside/back of the unit are three black sockets. Turn them 1/4 turn counterclockwise with a flathead screwdriver. If the socket is tight, needle-nose pliers help. Installation: Drop new bulbs in place and lock by turning clockwise. Note: When reassembling, make sure the air vent tube aligns correctly.
Climate panel (CCM) bulbs
The climate panel typically uses taller bulbs than the light switch. Pen holder removal: Start by removing the pen holder/plastic cover behind the shift lever using a lever or scraper. Two Torx screws (T25) are hidden underneath. Panel removal: Once the screws are out, pull the climate panel out from the bottom and then downward to release it from the upper clips. Bulb location: Bulbs (usually 4–6) are on the back of the panel in recesses. They are replaced the same way as the light switch bulbs (1/4 turn). Note: Avoid touching the small temperature sensor grille on the back of the panel or the small fan behind it. Clean them carefully with compressed air while the panel is removed.
Tips and cost-saving trick
Bulb type: Originals are expensive, but many enthusiasts swap just the bulbs (Neo Wedge or T3/T4.2 types) into old plastic holders. This requires care in bending the leads, but costs a fraction. Color: If using aftermarket bulbs, remember to transfer the old blue cap to the new bulb to keep the light color correct green. Without the cap, the light will be yellowish. LED swap: You can use LED bulbs, but they may not dim evenly and the light beam can be spotty, making panel illumination uneven.
