Air filter replacement
Air filter replacement
The air filter (cabin air filter) should be replaced once a year or approximately every 20,000 km. A dirty filter is the most common cause of window fogging, stale odors in the cabin, and weak airflow.
How do I know if the filter needs replacement?
Window fogging: The best indicator. A moist and dirty filter keeps humidity trapped in the cabin. Weak airflow: Even with the fan at full blast, you only get a gentle breeze from the vents. Odor: A musty or earthy smell as soon as the air conditioning turns on.
Step-by-step work procedure
The filter is located in almost all Volvo models in the passenger footwell, directly between the center console and the blower motor. 1. Preparation Move the passenger seat as far back as possible to give yourself working space. Remove the trim panel (kick panel) below the glove box. It is usually secured with two or three screws or plastic clips. 2. Opening the filter housing Look for a vertical, narrow plastic door on the right side of the blower motor (or directly next to it). At the top of the door there is usually a plastic locking tab. Use a small flat-head screwdriver to gently press the tab open. Be careful, as old plastic breaks easily. In some models, the door is held by one or more small screws (often 5.5 mm or 7 mm). 3. Replacing the filter Pull the old, dirty filter straight down out of the housing. Tip: Leaves and debris may fall from the housing, so have a vacuum or rag ready. Check the airflow direction of the new filter (Air Flow). The arrow should point toward the cabin (away from the blower). Push the new filter into place. It may require some bending to fit all the way in. 4. Reassembly Snap the filter cover back into place. Make sure it is tight so blow-through air doesn't escape into the footwell. Reattach the kick panel trim.
Important considerations
Activated charcoal vs. paper filter: If you suffer from allergies or engine exhaust odors in city driving, choose an activated charcoal filter. It costs more, but filters odors more effectively. Moisture: If the old filter is soaking wet, check that the scuttle panel (rain water drain) at the bottom of the windshield is not clogged with leaves and water. If the drain channels are blocked, water rises through the fresh air vent onto the filter.
Tip
With the filter removed, you can spray air conditioning system cleaner directly on the evaporator core to eliminate odor-causing bacteria.
