Steering lock problem

V70 IIIS60 II

How does the steering lock problem manifest?

The car reports a steering lock problem while driving and asks to stop. After shutdown, the car will not start anymore. The problem can start as random and get worse.

How to replace the steering lock without programming?

A new steering lock would normally need to be programmed to work with the key. If the problem is mechanical, you can avoid programming by transferring the old lock's circuit board to the new lock. All intelligence between the lock and key is in the circuit board — the hardware and plastic do not know the lock has been replaced.

Where is the steering lock fuse located?

The fuse is in the passenger footwell: 1. Open the passenger door. 2. Remove the airbag button plastic cover (yank). Be careful of electrical connection. 3. Remove the door frame vertical plastic and trim list (yank). 4. Fold the floor covering from the front. 5. Open the plastic cover from the engine side by lifting. 6. The steering lock fuse (7.5 A) is at position 19. Spare fuse at position 14.

How much does the repair cost?

A used steering lock from a scrapyard costs about 80 euros. Circuit board transfer is free DIY work. Compared to a dealership repair, the savings are significant.
