AWD rear differential bearing lubrication
What causes Volvo AWD rear differential noise?
The most common cause is the pinion shaft front bearing wearing out. The problem affects almost all all-wheel drive P3 platform models.
Can just the bearing be replaced instead of the entire differential?
Yes. The front bearing can be replaced without removing the entire differential/Haldex package from under the car. A bearing set costs about 60 euros, while Volvo's complete differential replacement costs significantly more.
How to access the AWD bearing on the XC60?
1. Remove the exhaust (center flange open, cut with a dull saw past the Haldex clutch). 2. Remove the drive shaft: mark the position on the front and rear flanges, bolts off. 3. Remove the Haldex package (4 bolts). Remember to disconnect the electrical connector and prepare for Haldex oil. 4. Scrape the spline off the pinion shaft end. 5. Replace the front bearing.
