Starting problems 2.0D

S40V50C30

Why won't the Volvo 2.0D rev or does it stall after starting?

A very likely cause is a stuck bypass flap (vacuum-operated flap in front of the intake manifold). Typical symptoms: Engine starts at low RPM, doesn't respond to throttle RPMs rise slowly to normal level Engine may stall Heavy smoke and bad smell when engine finally responds to throttle

How do you check the bypass flap?

Remove the turbo hose from the flap housing. Press the flap closed with your finger and test how it opens on its own. If the flap feels stuck, it needs cleaning or replacement.

Is oil inside the turbo hose normal?

A small amount of oil inside the turbo hose is normal and unlikely to cause running problems. The fault is usually found in the bypass flap.
