Fuel pump timing 2.5 TDI
How is the fuel pump timing done on a 2.5 TDI?
The pump camshaft gear slot does not mark anything, because the gears have no keys — they can be installed in any position. Below is the adjustment procedure when starting from scratch.
What is the correct adjustment sequence for fuel pump timing?
1. Align the flywheel mark (inspection hole found at the junction of the transmission and engine, at the bottom of the engine). 2. The small slot on the inside of the pump pulley should align with the mark on the pump's cast iron bracket (probably a few mm earlier). 3. On the side of the pump there is a 10 mm locking screw with a metal shim underneath. Remove the shim and tighten the lock. 4. Remove the rear camshaft gear completely. 5. Loosen the camshaft gear bolt and gently tap the gear off its taper (there is a small hole in the distributor head back plastic for this purpose). 6. Rotate the slot at the rear end of the camshaft to align with the cover sealing level. 7. Install the rear camshaft gear (bolt loose). 8. Install the pump belt at the correct tension (the advance adjuster roller arrow aligns with the cover notch).
How do I know that the timing is correct?
The final fine-tuning is performed by the technician. The goal is to get the engine running and the car to the workshop, where the timing is finalized with measurement equipment.
