Volvo 940 chassis differences

The Volvo 940 uses an independent double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension. Different model years and variants have minor geometry differences.

The sedan (940) and estate (V940) share the same basic suspension architecture, though the estate has slightly higher spring rates due to added load capacity.

All 940 models use a rack-and-pinion steering system. Power steering is standard. Some earlier models have a slightly different ratio than later variants.

Front suspension uses steering fluid (ATF). Shock absorbers are sealed units. Multi-link rear suspension uses similar steering fluid in the dampers.

Many suspension components are interchangeable between 1990-1997 model years, but always verify fitment before purchasing. Control arms, tie rods, and some bushings often interchange.
