VDO Speedometer Calibration

Many Volvo 700/900 series VDO speedometers are factory-set to read approximately 5–10 km/h high as a safety factor. The speedometer operates based on an ITT UAF2115 microchip, and the display can be adjusted by changing the chip's control resistor.

How is the speedometer error corrected?

The speedometer display is controlled by a resistor at pin 4 of the chip. By changing this resistor's value in the same proportion as the speedometer error, you can make the needle read correctly. Logic: If the speedometer reads 110 km/h when the actual speed is 100 km/h (10% error), the resistor value should be increased by 10%. Example: If the original resistor is 51 Ω, replace it with approximately 56 Ω. Fine-tuning: A small multi-turn potentiometer (trimmer) can be installed in place of the resistor, allowing you to adjust the speedometer precisely using GPS speed.

Disassembly and Modification Instructions Step by Step

Removal: Remove the instrument cluster from the car. Open the rear screws. Note! Silver screws are longer than gold ones; keep them separate. Speedometer unit: Remove the speedometer itself by opening four screws on the circuit board side. Be careful not to confuse the two connectors beneath the screws. Needle: Carefully remove the needle by turning it counterclockwise and pulling outward. Remove the speedometer dial (glued). Circuit board: Open three small screws under the housing and two screws on both sides of the stepper motor (silver disc). Now the circuit board comes out. Resistor replacement: Find the resistor at pin 4 location and solder it out. Replace it with a new one calculated for your needs. Assembly: Reassemble in reverse order. Needle setting: Push the needle into place and turn it counterclockwise until it stops at rest position (usually at 20 km/h position or stop pin, depending on model).

When is calibration necessary?

When speedometer error interferes with driving or cruise control use. When the car has had different original tire size or final drive ratio installed. When the speedometer circuit board has had capacitors replaced ("recap"), but the display is still inaccurate.

Don't Forget the Capacitors!

If the speedometer stutters, "jumps" or rises with delay, resistor replacement alone won't help. In such cases, the cause is usually leaking electrolytic capacitors, which corrode the circuit board. They should be replaced with new ones while the instrument cluster is already open.
