Temperature gauge backlight replacement
Why is my temperature gauge dark?
The small incandescent bulb (usually 1.2W or 2W) behind the gauge has burned out. This is cosmetic but important for nighttime visibility.
What bulb type do I need?
Most Volvo 740/940 gauges use a bayonet or twist-fit 1.2W 12V bulb. Check your owner's manual or the socket for the exact type.
Can I change it without removing the cluster?
On some models you can access it from behind without full removal. Open the steering column covers and reach under the gauge. If stuck, you may need to remove the cluster—about 30 minutes of work.
How do I remove the instrument cluster?
Disconnect the battery, remove the lower steering column cover and side trim, unbolt the steering column lower section, then unbolt the cluster. Carefully pull it out and disconnect the speedometer cable and electrical connectors.
Are there other bulbs that burn out?
Yes. The fuel gauge, oil pressure, and RPM gauge backlights can all fail. Consider replacing all cluster bulbs while you have it apart.
