Shock absorber upper end repair

The shock absorber upper end is secured to a threaded sleeve inside the frame rail. If the stud breaks internally, the traditional repair would often require fuel tank removal or cutting into the frame rail. However, there is an easier route: through the trunk floor.

How do I access the broken stud or nut?

You can perform the repair from inside the car (from the trunk): Preparation: Empty the trunk and remove floor panels. Find the correct location above the shock's upper end (under the bitumen mat). Drilling: Drill approximately a 25 mm hole in the trunk floor directly above the shock mounting point. Tip: You can first drill a small "peek hole" to confirm the location before making the larger hole. Access: Through the hole you will see the tube-shaped sleeve/nut inside the frame rail that the shock stud threads into.

How is the repair carried out in practice?

Once you have access from above: Drilling: Drill out the broken stud or stripped threads from below. New fastening: Use an original longer stud of equivalent strength grade. Installation: Push the stud up through the shock eye and into the frame rail sleeve. From the trunk side, place a large washer and Nyloc nut on the stud end. Finishing: Protect the drilled hole with rust preventative and cover it with a suitable rubber plug or bitumen mat.

Does this guide also work for the Sedan?

The guide is tested on 740 and 940 estate models (V740/V940), which have similar floor structures. The same method will likely work on sedans too, but the space on the trunk shelf may be slightly different.

Why is this better than the official repair method?

Time: You save hours because you don't need to lower the fuel tank or disassemble rear axle components. Cost: You only need a new stud, nut, and drill bit. Reliability: A through-bolt fastening with a Nyloc nut is very solid and easier to open in the future.

Important considerations during installation

Be careful when drilling not to damage the shock's upper eye or the shock absorber rod itself. Ensure the stud is long enough that the Nyloc nut's locking section rises clearly onto the threads.
