Relay panel and fuel pump relay

The Volvo 700 and 900-series relay panel is located behind the ashtray and storage locker in the center console. Relay locations are marked with letters A–N, and their arrangement has remained fairly consistent over the years.

Relays are arranged in rows. In newer Volvo 940 models (around model years 1994–1995, especially with B230FD engines), the traditional white fuel pump relay has been replaced with a blue relay. Identification: The relay is square in shape, lower (squat) and bright blue in color. Location: It is found in the front row of the relay panel, second from the right (position E). Use: This is used alongside both Bosch and Regina injection systems in equipped cars.

A faulty relay is one of the most common reasons why a Volvo leaves you stranded. Typical symptoms include: The car stalls while driving unexpectedly, but may start again after a short wait. The car will not start when hot, but starts when cold. The fuel pump does not prime for a moment when you turn on the ignition.

Yes, often the fault is in the cold solder joints inside the relay. If you can use a soldering iron, you can open the relay's plastic case and re-solder the circuit board connections. This is often a more durable solution than a cheap aftermarket relay.
