Multi-link rear shock absorber replacement
What is a multi-link rear suspension?
A multi-link suspension uses multiple control arms to locate the rear axle or wheels, providing independent wheel motion while maintaining axle alignment. Volvo used this system on later 700/900 series and newer models.
How do I remove the old shock?
Remove the interior trim to access the upper shock mount. Unbolt the upper and lower fastening points. On some models, the shock is attached to a sub-frame which must be partially lowered for access.
What shocks should I use as replacement?
Use OEM Volvo shocks or equivalent aftermarket shocks rated for multi-link suspension geometry. Measure the original shock length and mounting points to ensure correct fitment.
Do I need special tools?
You will need: Standard socket set, wrenches, and a jack/lift to safely raise the vehicle. Spring compressors are not needed as the shock is independent of the spring.
Is wheel alignment needed?
If you only replaced the shocks and did not disturb other suspension components, wheel alignment should remain within factory specifications. However, a check is recommended.
Can I replace just one shock?
While technically possible, it is recommended to replace both rear shocks as a pair to maintain balanced suspension behavior and even handling characteristics.
