M90 dual mass flywheel to solid flywheel conversion
What is a dual mass flywheel?
The M90 dual mass flywheel (DMF) has two weighted rings connected by springs to reduce vibration and noise. As it ages, the springs fail and the flywheel becomes unbalanced.
Why replace the dual mass flywheel?
A failing DMF causes rattling, vibration, rough idle and transmission shudder. A solid flywheel eliminates these issues but requires a stiffer clutch to handle the increased inertia.
Which solid flywheel fits?
Use a Sachs solid steel flywheel rated for M90 engines (check compatibility with your engine code). Pair it with a performance clutch rated for 200+ Nm torque.
What clutch should I use?
A sprung hub clutch is recommended to smooth engagement and protect the gearbox. Avoid paddle or race clutches for street use unless you want a stiff, grabby pedal feel.
How much does it cost?
Solid flywheel (150-250 EUR), clutch kit (200-350 EUR), pressure plate (100-150 EUR), and labour. Budget 1000-1500 EUR total for a shop job.
Will my car run worse?
No. You may notice slightly higher idle vibration compared to the stock DMF, but overall drivability improves. Throttle response and shift quality feel sharper.
