Headliner restoration and repair
Why does the headliner sag?
The adhesive that bonds fabric to the backing board deteriorates over time, especially with heat and humidity. Interior trim can also push the fabric down if not adjusted properly.
Can I fix it without removing the roof?
Yes. For moderate sagging, apply contact adhesive from underneath using a syringe or caulk gun. Press the fabric up and let it cure overnight. A headliner sagging rod helps hold tension.
What adhesive should I use?
Flexible contact cement or Dap Weldwood spray adhesive works best. Avoid water-based glues. Test on a hidden area first to ensure the fabric doesn't shrink or discolor.
How do I repair torn fabric?
Small tears can be sewn with matching thread. Larger rips should be patched with self-adhesive headliner repair tape or fabric patches available at auto parts suppliers.
Can I dye the headliner?
Fabric dye or spray-on headliner paint (available in black, grey, or tan) can restore faded areas. Clean first, mask off surrounding trim, and apply in thin coats.
Should I replace the entire headliner?
Full replacement requires removing the roof panel and usually costs 800-1500 EUR at a shop. DIY restoration with reglue and patching is much cheaper and works well for light to moderate damage.
