Door panel removal
Door panel removal
Removing a door panel is necessary, for example, for window regulator maintenance, speaker replacement, or central locking motor repair.
1. Speaker grille removal
The grille is the first obstacle, and there are two main types: Newer model (most common 940): Push the grille forward (toward the car's front) until it releases from the lock, and lift it out. Older model: Pull gently straight out. Note: Under the grille usually reveals one or two screws that hold the door panel in place on the frame.
2. Handle and lock button
Open handle frame: Carefully pry the plastic frame away from around the handle. It is held by small clips. Lock button: Turn the lock button (the one used to lock the door from inside) counterclockwise to remove it. Grab handle: Remove the screws at the bottom of the grab handle (or under the cover plate). Often the handle has two large screws requiring a sturdy Phillips screwdriver.
3. Bottom edge clips
The door panel's bottom edge has three white (or gray) plastic rotation clips: Turn the clips 90 degrees (e.g., with a coin or wide chisel tip). When the clips are vertical, they release the door panel's bottom edge from the door.
4. Lifting the door panel
Once all screws and bottom clips are removed: Grasp the door panel at the bottom edge. Lift the panel straight up so it rises out of the window trim groove. Warning: Do not pull the panel sharply outward until you have disconnected the power window switch and any door light wires.
Important notes on installation
Moisture seal: Behind the door panel is a plastic film. If it's torn, repair it with tape; otherwise the door will "sweat" inward and wet the floor mats. Wiring: Make sure speaker wires and power window connectors snap firmly into place before pushing the panel back into the groove. Window trim: Make installation easier by lowering the window, which makes guiding the top edge back into the groove easier.
