Bendix Regina & Rex-i
Bendix Regina & Rex-i
Volvo has used both Bosch LH-Jetronic and Bendix Regina systems side-by-side in 700 and 900 series models. Although they look similar at first glance, their parts are not interchangeable.
How do I identify if my car has Bendix Regina or Bosch LH?
You can identify the Regina system easily from two things: Intake pipe: Look at the pipe after the air filter housing. If the pipe is hard plastic and has a 2-pin connector on its side (intake air temperature sensor), it is Regina. In Bosch models, at this point there is a large air mass meter (AMM). Ignition coil: In Regina (Rex-i ignition) the coil is located in the driver's side shock absorber tower. It is shaped like a rectangular "square coil", unlike Bosch's traditional cylindrical coil.
Does Bendix Regina have an air mass meter (AMM)?
No, it does not. Regina does not measure air by mass but calculates the amount of air going into the engine using two other sensors: MAP sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure): Measures intake manifold vacuum. IAT sensor (Inlet Air Temperature): Measures intake air temperature (found in the intake pipe).
Can I use a Bosch LH-Jetronic lambda sensor in Regina?
You cannot. This is a common mistake when ordering spare parts. Bosch LH: Uses zirconium lambda sensor. Bendix Regina: Uses titanium lambda sensor. These sensors operate in different voltage ranges and work on different principles and are not interchangeable. Quality titanium sensors are manufactured by Bosch and NTK (NGK).
What other differences are there in the systems?
Although both systems control fuel delivery similarly, Regina is often more electrically sensitive to correct sensor values. Because the system lacks an air mass meter, it is very sensitive to intake leaks and temperature sensor failures.
Key differences summarized
Part / Bosch LH-Jetronic / Bendix Regina Air measurement / Air mass meter (AMM) / MAP sensor + Intake air temperature sensor Ignition coil / Round cylinder / Rectangular square coil Lambda sensor / Zirconium / Titanium Intake pipe / Ribbed hose + AMM / Hard plastic pipe + sensor
