Central locking repair

Central locking problems in the Volvo 400 Series are often caused by moisture that damages either electrical connections or the control unit itself. The system works by reversing polarity, and a faulty control unit can burn out door motors by leaving power on too long.

What are the most common causes of central locking failure?

The most typical fault locations are: Driver's door wiring harness: Wire insulation often breaks at the door pass-through. Control module (relay): The unit ("Central door lock") located in the driver's footwell is prone to moisture damage, causing circuit board oxidation. Burnt-out motors: If the control module gets stuck and supplies power continuously, all door and trunk motors can fail simultaneously.

Where is the central locking control module located?

The control module is located in the driver's footwell. It resembles a standard relay, with "Central door lock" printed on its side. Its function is to provide a one-second power pulse to the locks and reverse polarity depending on whether the doors are locking or unlocking.

How do you identify the different wires and their functions?

The system's wiring is color-coded as follows: Brown and green (thin): Control signal from the driver's door microswitch to the module (Brown = negative). Yellow and green (thick): Power from the control module to the door motors. These are wired in parallel to all doors. Note: The driver's door may have a thin yellow wire wrapped on a spool — it is usually not in use.

How do you test if the door motors are intact?

You can test the motors directly from the control module connector: Find the thick yellow and green wires from the connector. Supply 12V directly to them. Interpretation: If no lock moves, the wiring is broken or all motors are faulty. If the connector sparks heavily, there is a short circuit in the system. If the locks move, the fault is in the control module or the driver's door microswitch.

Can the control module be purchased new?

Finding a new original "Central door lock" module directly from a dealer (e.g., Bilia) can be difficult, but they are readily available as used parts. Tip: Check the trunk lock motor first by removing the lid trim panel. It is often the easiest place to start testing mechanical function and electrical supply.
