Immobilizer Bypass
Immobilizer bypass
Volvo 400 Series late models often have an original immobilizer that activates automatically. As the system ages, it can cause starting problems, especially if the remote control isn't working reliably.
How does the original immobilizer normally operate?
Activation: The immobilizer engages automatically when the car is switched off, or about 30 seconds after doors are opened via remote (if power isn't switched on). Disarming: Press the Unlock button on the remote. The LED light turns off to indicate the immobilizer is disarmed. Note: You cannot override the immobilizer if the key is already in the ON position. Power must be off, the button must be pressed, and the engine restarted.
Where are the immobilizer relays located?
The system's controlling relays are found behind the glove box. When the glove box is removed, two critical relays are visible: Red relay: Controls the fuel pump. Large black relay: Special relay (approximately 5–6 cm tall) controlled by a pulsed signal. This relay cannot be switched on by applying steady DC voltage alone.
How is the immobilizer bypassed in an emergency?
If the immobilizer fails and the car must be made mobile, the relays can be replaced with jumper wires. This requires precision to connect to the correct pins: Fuel pump: Replace the red relay with a jumper wire (use thick enough cable as current is high). Ignition/Starting: Replace the large black relay with a jumper wire between corresponding pins. Warning: Bypass makes the car more susceptible to theft and removes the original security function.
What does the indicator light (LED) tell you about system status?
Flashing: Immobilizer is on (doors may still be open). Solid: Power is on but the immobilizer has blocked starting. Off: Immobilizer is disarmed and the car is ready to start.
Can the original system be replaced with an aftermarket alarm?
Yes, many enthusiasts bypass the original relays and install a modern security system instead (e.g., Viper). The new system handles locking and immobilizer control, but the original pulsed-control black relay must usually be bypassed permanently. Important tip: If your car stalls while driving, remember the immobilizer may engage immediately. You must switch power completely off and press the remote's unlock button before the car will agree to restart.
