300 Series Shift Lever and Linkage Removal
Shift Lever Linkage Removal
Removing the shift lever linkage in a 300 Series often requires working space around the drivetrain. Instructions vary by engine type, as the lever bracket is mounted differently.
How do I begin shift lever disassembly from inside the vehicle?
Regardless of engine type, start disassembly from inside the car: 1. Remove the shift lever knob by pulling it firmly upward. 2. Remove the leather boot by opening the center screw in front of the plastic bracket. 3. Remove the rubber ring between the lever and boot, and the protective rubber below the leather boot. 4. Pull off the plastic gaiter.
How is the shift lever bracket removed on Volvo-engined models (2.0)?
On Volvo-engined models, the bracket is mounted to the propeller shaft. Work is easier if you lower the rear and transmission about 5–10 cm. Shaft mounting: The bracket is secured to the propeller shaft rubber bushing with two M6 nuts. Remove the nuts. Front mounting: Remove the clevis pin from the rear of the engine compartment (on the clutch cover) that holds the bracket arm. Linkage: The shift rod is removed from the lever by opening a 4 mm socket head cap screw from underneath the lever arm. Important: Use a quality socket or wrench, not a cheap angle wrench, and apply generous penetrating oil.
How is the shift lever bracket removed on Renault-engined models (1.4/1.7)?
On Renault-engined models, the propeller shaft usually needs to be removed for access. The bracket is mounted to the body, not the propeller shaft. Body mounting: The bracket is secured to both sides of the transmission tunnel with M8 bolts (13 mm head). Front mounting: Mounted on the front of the transmission above the propeller shaft with a clevis pin. Remove the pin from one end and pull it out. Lever removal: Once the 4 mm socket head is open and the clevis pin is removed, remove the rubber bushing around the lever from inside the vehicle. The lever rises up and the bracket falls out of the car.
What is the difference in shift rod removal from the rear?
On both models, the shift rod is removed from the transmission by pulling the rubber dust cover out of the way and disconnecting the joint.
